Spruce

Spruce was more than just a companion — he was a miracle, a fighter, and a deeply beloved soul who forever changed the lives of everyone who met him. His story began in unimaginable pain. Spruce endured the darkest beginnings — horrific abuse, severe neglect, and starvation that nearly took his life. But fate had other plans.
In 2022, angels in the form of rescuers brought him to the Burlington Humane Society. There, surrounded by compassion and tireless care, Spruce found his first glimmers of safety. So fragile he couldn’t even lift his head, he began to fight. And on the third day, he lifted it — a quiet victory that marked the beginning of his remarkable journey.
That September, we met Spruce, his forever family, and from that moment, he was no longer alone. Despite being severely disabled and needing multiple corrective surgeries, Spruce radiated love, joy, and an unshakable will to live. Every step was painful, but his spirit never wavered.
His favourite things were the simplest: watching people go by, chewing on his dad’s hands, evening snuggles with his beloved sister Alexis, and soaking in the love that surrounded him. Every treat, every cuddle, every new experience filled him with wonder. Spruce didn’t just survive — he lived, fully and beautifully. He was loved, wanted and needed.
His final surgery, the fourth and most hopeful, took place at the University of Guelph Hospital on October 28, 2023. He was heartbreakingly close to the finish line. His passing that day shattered our hearts.
Spruce’s voice — always curious and talkative — echoes in the silence he left behind. His absence is deeply felt by all who knew him, but most of all by his sister Alexis, who misses her best friend dearly.
To our sweet boy: You were joy, resilience, and unconditional love in its purest form. You taught us how to appreciate every little thing. Run free now, no pain, no limits — just freedom. We will meet again, and next time, it will be forever.
We love you always, Spruce.
